Grow $700 of food in a 100 sq ft garden!

Grow $700 of Food in 100 Square Feet! If more Canadians grew a little food — instead of so much grass — our savings on grocery bills would be astounding.

The total value of the fresh vegetables author Rosalind Creasy grew in her 100-square-foot garden in 2008 was $683.43!  In 2007, I began to get lots of questions about growing food to help save money. Then, while working on my new book, Edible Landscaping, I had an aha! moment. As I was assembling statistics to show the wastefulness of the American obsession with turf, I wondered what the productivity of just a small part of American lawns would be if they were planted with edibles instead of grass.

This is the beginning of an article I read in Mother Earth News Magazine (one of my favourties for learning how to homestead and live sustainably!!)

Read the rest of the article here: http://magazine-directory.com/Mother-Earth-News.htm

Just think what would happen if everyone grew just a small veggie garden in their back (or front!) yards instead of grass? It's mind boggling, actually! You would not only SAVE money on not having to mow, fertilize and care for a lawn, but you can grow almost $700 of food in it... and that doesn't include winter and spring veggies that we are lucky enough to be able to grow on the west coast! If everyone did something like this, just imagine how huge of a carbon footprint we would be saving, not having to have as many veggies trucked or flown in from various corners of the world.

Give it some thought. Now is the time to get started, and grow some of the yummiest, healthy food you can get in your own back yard!
